If you just swap the word "Parents" for "Teachers"....
I was that kind of teacher.
...AND THE DAY I stopped repeating myself was a monumental day.
I had been studying Love & Logic...I was learning about using enforceable statements & giving kids choices to avoid a power struggle... over time, I acquired an arsenal of STRATEGIES.
Because the truth is, I repeated myself before because, I didn't know what else to do. Once I learned some effective strategies, there was a turning point.
Now that I KNOW better, I can DO better... Now, instead of repeating a direction, I take action. That action can be an array of different things-sometimes I wait, staring directly at the student (letting them know I meant what I said and now I'll give you a moment to take me seriously.)
That sounds intense, but it doesn't have to be! I can stare at that student, with a smile on my face.😀
They don't have to feel threatened. They just need to know, I asked you to do something and now you do it.
It's an important skill called, Following Directions...and a classroom can't run without it.
Or I can take action another way... one of my FAVORITE GO-TO’S is SO SIMPLE.... I just say..... "uh-o"... I don't know what it is, but something about "uh-o" makes kids tune in.
It goes like this: "Ok, everyone, markers up!"...(a few kids not doing it...) "Uh-o!" (Look at them)...they lift the marker! I throw uh-o's and oops around interchangeably!! Until I get everyone doing what I ask! It's such a quick thing to say.
You will have everyone with you after only a second or two of “oops/uh-o's!”
Some other actions I take are--
☑️changing my location, moving closer to the student...
☑️ stop, give a compliment (reset the vibe if a kid is shutting down)
☑️reach out and touch their shoulder or hand to refocus ...
